Jose Santana Grant was born on August 26, 1942, in Chorillo, Panama City, Panama, to Jose Santana Grant and Jean Knight. Though his early life came with challenges, he was lovingly raised by his grandmother, Blanche Knight, whose strength and guidance helped shape the man he would become.
From a young age, Jose stood out for his sharp mind, iron will, and physical discipline. In high school, he immersed himself in bodybuilding, swimming, and track, driven by an insatiable hunger for self-improvement. He devoured sports magazines, not for entertainment, but for knowledge, always seeking ways to push himself further. His dedication earned him admiration and respect, both from peers and mentors.
On June 4, 1965, Jose began a long and honorable career with the United States Air Force, enlisting as an Airman Basic and proudly serving during the Vietnam War. He retired in 1992 with the rank of Staff Sergeant, carrying with him a legacy of duty, strength, and unwavering commitment to his fellow servicemen.
On May 20, 1967, Jose married the love of his life, Luz Maria Cunningham. Their bond endured every test of time, standing as a testament to enduring love and partnership. Together, they raised three cherished daughters, Elisa, Estrella, and Cristina in Jamaica, Queens, New York City. Their home was one filled with discipline, laughter, learning, and love.
After retiring from the New York City Transit Authority on May 3, 2003, where he served as an MSII in the Track Department, Jose and Luz relocated to Port Charlotte, Florida. Retirement never meant rest for Jose. He joined The American Legion, served as the president of the NYC Retirees of Florida, participated in bowling leagues, tended tirelessly to his home and garden, and even built his own home gym. True to his nature, he remained active, engaged, and ever-curious.
Jose was a man of many talents and endless energy. He was the first and last on the dance floor, a master craftsman, a dedicated sports enthusiast, and an informal but trusted world news analyst. He was always ready with advice, encouragement, or a practical solution, often before you even knew you needed it. His legacy is not just in what he did, but in how he made others feel: seen, heard, and inspired to be better.
His presence touched lives across cities, states, and countries. Though he spent his final days in Port Charlotte, the ripple of his influence extends far beyond.
Jose was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Alfredo Grant, and his sister Blanche Chambers. He is survived by his devoted wife, Luz M. Grant; his daughters Elisa Maria Grant, Estrella Cecilia Briggs, and Cristina Judith Grant; his brother Walterio Grant and sister-in-law Alfreida Grant; his sister Felicia Grant; his grandchildren, Taniqua Shaneigh Tyson, Julie Tonya Chambers, Mustafah Wesley Rasin, Nalijah Artayah Rasin, Zaahir Elizabeth Ross, and Darius Michael Briggs; five great-grandchildren; and countless extended family members, friends, and those lucky enough to know him.
Jose Santana Grant lived his life with pride, purpose, and a full heart. His was a life well-lived, and he leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and unshakable integrity.
He will be deeply missed, and forever remembered.
