John J. Mooney, 69, of Punta Gorda passed away Friday, February 27, 2015. He was the son of John and Gertrude Mooney, born December 30, 1945 in Chicago, IL. John served in the US Army during Vietnam. He started working for the railroad in sales, following in his father's footsteps and then later started his own freight trucking company. John moved in 2001 from Chicago to Punta Gorda. In 2002, he met Marilyn Smith the First Woman Mayor of Punta Gorda and were soon married in Sept of 2002, making him the City's "First Man". He was a member of the Elks 2606 and Sacred Heart Catholic Church. John's passion was the love of sailing and love of people who enjoyed his wit and great Irish jokes. John will be greatly missed by his wife of 12 years, Marilyn, children, James (Kate) Mooney, John P. Mooney and Maureen (Rob) Pendl; step-son, Paul Hibner; brother, James; grandchildren, Elizabeth, Amanda, Kevin, Nicole and Brandon. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Kathleen. A celebration of John's life will be held from 12:00 to 3 pm, Saturday, March 7, 2015 at Italia, next to River City at 127 W. Marion Ave, Punta Gorda. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Tidewell Hospice, Inc., Sacred Heart Catholic Church or charity of your choice.
