Obituary

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of James William Johnson, who departed this life on October 13th, 2026, at the age of 86, at his residence in Port Charlotte, Florida.

James was born on August 28th, 1940. He committed his life to his beloved wife, Tommie Lou Johnson, of 61 years, raising his four children and to his career in education. Together, James and Tommie nurtured a loving family, which includes their four devoted children: Pam Rhett (Randy), Angie Goeke (Jim), Christie Keyser (Jeff), and James Johnson (Karen). James was also a proud grandfather of nine: Jordan Rhett (Dre), Benjamin Rhett (Jenna), Claudia Rhett (Bradley), Natalie Williamson, Nick Goeke, Kayla Keyser, Christopher Keyser, Andy Johnson, and Clara Johnson. He was a proud grandfather of two, Thomas Rhett and Joanna Rhett.

After graduating from Mississippi State University, James began teaching industrial arts in Mississippi and then in Florida. After teaching almost 20 years, James made the transition to adult education at Charlotte Vocational Technical center as one of the first staff members in 1980. He became a pivotal fixture in the industry as he helped develop the curriculum to educate future auto mechanics in the state and beyond. Later in his career James worked on accreditation teams helping to develop a standard of excellence in the automotive industry. James served at his church, First Baptist of Port Charlotte, on the building and grounds team and the music ministry. He was a life-long learner earning a Master’s Degree in Education and his private pilot’s license. In spite of all his professional accomplishments, James’ greatest joy was talking about his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He loved them deeply.

A celebration to honor James William Johnson will be held at Life Celebration Center of Punta Gorda on October 24, 2025, with a celebration of life service for family and friends at 10:00 am. All who knew and loved James are welcome to join the family in remembrance of a remarkable man who will be deeply missed. A graveside service will be held at a later date in Scooba, Mississippi, where he will be laid to rest.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in James name to the Charlotte Technical College assistance fund, 18150 Murdock Circle, Port Charlotte, FL, 33948.  https://ctc.yourcharlotteschools.net/
