Obituary

Gladys Fern Salisbury, beloved mother, daughter, sister, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on February 21, 2026, in Port Charlotte, Florida, at the age of 107. Born on August 18, 1918, in Milltown, Indiana, she grew up in Aurora, Illinois, where her unwavering spirit and determination first flourished. Despite her desire to serve her country during World War II, a heart condition prevented her from joining the U.S. Army, but her sister bravely served in New Guinea, embodying the courage that ran in their family.

She attended night classes at Aurora College, ultimately becoming a distinguished accountant whose talents shone brightly in the finance industry. In 1970, she became the first female president of the Fox River Valley Chapter of the National Association of Accountants-an accomplishment that reflected her dedication and leadership. Gladys served as office manager for two car dealerships, and she retired from a reputable accounting firm, leaving behind a legacy of integrity and professionalism in her field.

In 1978, Gladys relocated to Naples, Florida, and later settled in Port Charlotte in 1980, where she became an active member of the South Port Square community since 1998. An avid walker, Gladys loved the open air and embarked on many delightful ocean cruises. She also enjoyed playing bridge, golf, and immersing herself in her passion for reading, along with completing crossword and jigsaw puzzles. Her love for knitting and cooking resulted in many treasured family recipes. Orange was her favorite color, reflecting her vibrant personality and joyful outlook on life.

Gladys is survived by her son, Philip Michael "Mike" Barry, along with a loving niece and nephew. She is preceded in death by her parents, Shelby and Goldie Rothrock, dear sister, Crystal Belle, and her brother, Richard. Together, they will all rest in peace at Thompson Chapel Cemetery in Depauw, Indiana, surrounded by family.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the American Heart Association in her memory, reflecting her enduring spirit and love for life.

As we remember Gladys Fern Salisbury, we celebrate a remarkable woman whose life was filled with love, laughter, and unwavering dedication to her family and profession. She will be deeply missed but forever remembered in the hearts of those who were fortunate to know her.
