Betsy Young, 82, passed away after a long illness on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, at Solaris Healthcare in Port Charlotte, Florida.
Born in Whitpain Township (Blue Bell), Pennsylvania, on October 2, 1942, to William H. and Elizabeth M. Reinhart. She was a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother as well as a dear friend to many.
Betsy grew up on the "Wild Hyacinth Farm" in Whitpain with her parents and two older brothers. Her father Bill was actively farming when the children were young and Betsy shared in the chores of collecting eggs, milking the cow and harvesting vegetables. She always said that cutting asparagus was the one chore she disliked the most. Having two older brothers, she had to be pretty tough to compete with the boys, a trait she carried through the rest of her life. Betsy finally convinced her father to buy her a pony when she was a young teenager, and she competed in numerous horse shows and won dozens of ribbons. She had an idyllic childhood, spending time with her siblings and cousins who lived nearby. Betsy graduated from Ambler High School in 1960 and went on to work at Amchem in Ambler for a few years.
Shortly after high school, she met her husband of 62 years, Brian W. Young. They were married at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Fort Washington, Pennsylvania, on October 13, 1962. Betsy became a military wife as her husband Brian was serving in the United States Army at the time of their marriage. They resided in Laurel, Maryland, for the duration of her husband's service. Betsy worked for the University of Maryland during that time. After the army, she and her husband built a home adjacent to the family farm. It was there that they welcomed two children, Brian Jr. and Brooke. She was a stay-at-home mom for years until the children were older. Betsy served as a cub scout den mother and was always involved with her children's school trips and activities. From that time until retirement, she went to work for several of the family businesses, including Ronco Corp, Vertex Performance Products, and finally Cook and Young Industries.
Time with family was of utmost importance to Betsy. The family kept a boat on the Sassafras River in Georgetown, Maryland, and spent many summer weekends there. In 1984, the family purchased a home in Avalon, New Jersey, and enjoyed nearly thirty years spending spare time there. Ultimately, Punta Gorda, Florida, became the destination for spending winters in retirement.
Betsy is survived by her husband of 62 years, Brian, her son Brian W. Young, Jr. (Yvette), daughter Brooke E. Skoures (Evan), and grandchildren Alexander Skoures, Peyton Skoures, and Sommer Skoures, as well as many dear friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents, in-laws George and Etta Young, brothers Bill and Bob, and sister-in-laws Connie and Audrey.
A celebration of life will be arranged for at a later date.
