Obituary

Carl Raymond Winger, 91 of Punta Gorda, Florida, passed away at home with family by his side on June 9, 2026.

He was born on February 28, 1935, to Raymond Winger and Virginia Cross in Chicago, Illinois.

Carl studied accounting at John Carroll University in University Heights, Ohio, where he participated in the U.S. Army ROTC program. Following his service in the U.S. Army, he built a successful career as a financial executive with U.S. Steel, Bell & Howell and Vulcan Materials Company. He was a certified Public Accountant and received his Masters in Business Administration from Loyola, Chicago.

In 1958, he married the love of his life, Eleanor Markovics. Together they shared 56 wonderful years of marriage and raised their three children: Carl Winger, Barbara Wexler and Kathleen Bakko in Mt. Prospect, Illinois.

After retiring in 1999, Carl and Eleanor made their home in Punta Gorda, Florida, where they built an incredible community of friends. He was a devoted member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, serving for many years as a Lector, Eucharistic Minister and member of the Finance Committee.

Carl embraced life with curiosity and enthusiasm. He loved traveling, reading, golfing, fishing, boating and spending time with family and friends. Those who knew him will remember his infectious smile, laughter and sense of humor. He loved to end every day with his favorite cocktail, a Manhattan. Dinner was most always capped off with a bowl of his favorite ice cream - of which there were many flavors.

He is survived by his loving and caring wife Rosemary Nicolay, his son Carl Winger (Lisa), Barbara Wexler (Craig Koenig), Kathleen Bakko (Mike); grandchildren Matthew Winger, Courtney Winger (Dan Costa), Brian Winger (Lauren Pincus), Lauren Winger, David Wexler, Michelle Wexler (Mackenzie Paschke), Stephen Bakko (Julia), Amanda Bakko Combs (Zack); great grandchildren Chase Bakko, Wyatt Bakko.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, his wife of 56 years Eleanor; second wife Joyce Melanson; his beloved dog Mille, relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held on Monday, June 22, 2026, from 4-7pm at Life Celebration Center Punta Gorda (1515 Tamiami Trail, Punta Gorda, Florida). A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church (211 W. Charlotte Ave, Punta Gorda, Florida). A private burial will follow at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Hillside, Illinois.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Punta Gorda, Florida, https://sacredheartfl.org/ and the American Cancer Society, https://www.cancer.org/.
